The night of the 'World’s Greatest Exhibit,' the city was abuzzz. I had never seen it so alive. People were everywhere. Restaurants were standing-room-only, street vendors sold food as fast as they could make it. It was the busiest I had ever seen it before, or since. As we handed the doorman our tickets, Father and Claude glimpsed at one another, and nodded. This was the first time either one of them had acknowledged the other
since the argument on the Island. We took our seats up in the front row.“Fabulous tickets !!" I said to Father, I could almost reach out and touch the stage. An old man with a cane struggled his way out from the corner of the stage, and said a few words of introduction. Then, suddenly, the lights dimmed and the red curtain rose. In the middle of the stage, up on a platform, a trunk was highlighted by a spotlight. Father had a puzzled look on his face.
